The word “Frameless” (though an industry standard term) may be a bit of a misnomer when referring to some configurations of heavy glass European style shower enclosures. Design parameters may require some type of top support as a result of the door hinge placement or location of the oversized glass panels. Secure installation is normally accomplished by the use of a “header” extrusion, and in some cases a support bar. In many instances, channel extrusions are desirable over clips to secure the enclosure to horizontal surfaces. Clips not only have a tendency to “busy-up” the installation, but they also require extra glass fabrication which adds unnecessary cost. In any case, all of the hardware and aluminum profiles used in heavy glass enclosures are intended to work together to ensure the high-end look that is the ultimate goal of the design.
If your project involves building a new bathroom or remodeling an existing one, you or your contractor will generally have the opportunity to provide extra in-wall support at the enclosure attachment surfaces. This extra blocking will ensure trouble-free operation of hardware such as glass-to-wall hinges for many years to come. The absence of support blocking does not prevent us from designing a suitable “European” style shower enclosure for your bathroom. It only means that other acceptable types of attachment may have to be used.
Bathrooms are generally small spaces relative to other rooms in the house. Not only that, they have permanent fixtures that may interfere with the operation of a door or may hinder access to the enclosure. In most cases the issues created by cramped surroundings can be overcome by simply repositioning and/or resizing the door in your initial design. There may be other “unique” circumstances that would require the use of a bi-fold or single sliding door to facilitate proper design.
Luckily, K&K Glass has the experience to help resolve potential issues like these before construction begins. When you’re ready to start planning your frameless shower, let our experts work with you to help ensure your project goes smoothly.
